Regentonian Obituary

It is with great sadness and regret that the alumni inform you of the loss of our fellow Regentonian Mr. Victor Arthur Eldred Green at the age of 65.  This sad event took place on Wednesday, December 19th in Atlanta, Georgia, U.S.A.

He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Joy Esther Green; children Vitella, Adeyemi, and Evonne; and six grandchildren Noah, Alana, Anaya, Nia, Natalia, and Amir. He is also survived by numerous siblings, in-laws, relatives (including Mrs. Onike Williams, fellow Regentonians Mr. Edmund Thomas, and Mr. Ebun Thomas), close personal friend Mr. Adeola Campbell and numerous other friends and acquaintances.

Mr. Green attended the Sierra Leone Grammar School from 1965 to 1970. At the Grammar School he was an avid sportsmanand athlete of the Quartus house where he attained numerous successes in table tennis, and other sports. He also loved scrabble and checkers (locally known as draught) which he played with a number of friends. Upon completing fifth form at the Grammar School, he left for the Methodist Boys High School where he completed Sixth formbefore proceeding to the Fourah Bay College.  He graduated with a Bachelor in History in the early 80s before entering the Sierra Leonean workforce. He worked at the Standard Chartered Bank in Freetown, Sierra Leone for a number of years, before proceeding to the USA in 1987 to pursue graduate studies at Kent State University in Ohio.  After completing his graduate studies, he moved to Atlanta, Georgia where he has resided ever since. Mr. Green had a long successful career in the Food and Beverage industry where he rose to become Senior Manager for Popeye’s at the time of his passing.

He was the longest serving Treasurer (to date) of the Sierra Leone Grammar School Alumni Association – South-East branch, and one of the earliest members to join the group (just a few months) after its founding.  Mr. Green’s commitment to his Alma Mater and alumni chapter was exemplary. We fondly referred to him as Bra Green (not because of his age but due to the respect that he commanded amongst alums and also due to his prudence with the manner in which he handed our financial dealings). One of his roles included the remittances of scholarship funds to the school in Freetown. This role enabled him to become a familiar voice and face to the school Principals’ and Administration (when he visited the school). Bra Green was also known as “the last Man Standing” due to his dedication in ensuring that he manned the gate during our fundraising events from the start of the event until the late hours of the night.

Victor Green was a devout Christian whose response to inquiries as to how his day was going. will always respond in one of two ways; “Tell God Tenki’ or “Ar dae nar God Ein Han”. In other words “He give God Thanks” and “God is his provider and protector”.  Ensuing conversations with him will reveal that he is taking care of his grandkids, spending time with his family, working, cooking or gardening. His love for gardening became infections to fellow Regentonians who also started gardening. He provided seeds and tips to help members in their gardening quest. Bra Green loved to share his harvests with members and friends. He will entice members by saying that he had “Fresh Sawa - Sawa, Bitters, Bologi, Krain Krain, and Peteteh Leaf”(all local Sierra Leonean Vegetable varieties) amongst others. Members will jokingly ask him to bringing some of his produce to them. He will lovingly respond “kam pick am usef, u han nor cut”, in other words ‘members can come to his home and harvest the produce”. He loved to cook and was the majority provider of the Foo-Foo sauces, pepper soup and Jollof Rice during our events (especially our Receptions after our Thanks Giving service).

His last act of love for his alumni chapter and school was displayed on the weekend of November 22nd 2018.  Bra Green (along with his wife) hosted our Post Dinner Brunch/meeting at his residence where he catered extensively to the food and beverage needs of members. He jokingly referred to members as “Gluttonous and hungry” and as a result had to feed us extra to avoid us being labeled as Kwashiorkor men/malnourished adults. He and his wife proceeded the next day to Maryland to attend the fundraising dance of our sister alumni SLGSAANADMV, where he celebrated with Regentonians and Friends. What a remarkable display of dedication and commitment to the humanitarian cause of educating children!

The global Regentonian Brotherhood misses a dedicated brother in Mr. Victor Green. You were an epitome of the true Regentonian Spirit. The Regentonian spirit that sunders never; the Regentonian spirit that falters never; the Regentonian spirit that vanquishes never; the Regentonian spirit that conquers ever; the Regentonian spirit that will liveforever!

May your gentle soul Rest in Perfect Peace, Regentonian.
